Module 1: Library Lit

L.O.T.S.S. Luminaries

In Library 200, you will be asked to write a research paper. You may choose to write about a library "luminary," or someone important in the library field. To find articles on your research topic, one of the best periodical indexes to use is the database - Library Literature & Information Science Full text (Library Lit). This is one of EBSCO's databases available through SJSU Library.

Note: Access to this database will change in the next month or so as Wilson databases merge with and become part of the EBSCO platform.

As with most full-text databases, Library Lit does not provide full text for all articles. However, the SJSU King Library has customized its databases using SFX. SFX is a link server which allows the library to link to the full text of other databases also owned by SJSU. Look for the "Get Text" icon Get Text icon when you have an abstract or citation for an article for which you would like to locate the full text.

For articles without a full-text link, the citational information and the abstract are usually given. You will find a link to the library catalog so that you can see if the library has a print copy of the item. Also, you will see a link to SJSU Interlibrary Services (ILLIAD) where you can request delivery of a document.

Let's try to search for the luminary "Lotsee Patterson." Click Next to begin searching. The database will load in the right frame on the next screen, with directions for searching in the left. If you are accessing this database remotely, you will be asked to enter your SJPL barcode or SJSU ID and Pin number before being able to use the database.

IMPORTANT: Do not use the BROWSER'S back button in this module. Instead, if needed, use the back button located at the bottom of the left frame.
